I just wanted to know are freak trades happening anymore since NSE banned SLM for options? Is it safe to place market order in atleast liquid contracts now? Or should we stick to SLL and limit orders?

Freak trades started happening when NSE stopped trade execution range. They have stopped dramatically after NSE stopped the Stop-Loss Market orders for Options, and the guidance to not allow SLM stays.
In that light, you will have to continue adding Limit while placing Stop Loss orders in Options Trading.
