Battery report 2022 by Volta Foundation πŸ”‹

As we all know, batteries play a critical role in powering many of the devices and technologies that we rely on every day, from smartphones and laptops to electric vehicles and renewable energy systems.

While researching for bringing in maximum value to our community members on various topics, we came across a report by Volta Foundation on the state of batteries in 2022.

The report provides a comprehensive overview of the current state of the battery industry, including key trends, challenges, and opportunities. It covers various types of batteries, including lithium-ion, lead-acid, nickel-cadmium, and others, and examines how the industry has fared in the last year.

Here are few pointers from the report:

  • EV’s accounted to 10-12% of all the new cars sold in 2022

  • According to Climate Tech VC, 63 climate funds raised $64B in 2022 up from 62 climate funds raising $30B in 2021. With $94B raised since 2021, there remains an estimated $37B in dry powder for climate investing.

  • China continues to dominate the supply chain with Canada a close second"

  • Lithium, nickel, cobalt, graphite, and manganese are the five key minerals in EV batteries. Australia, Indonesia, and the Democratic Republic of Congo dominate mining, but China continues to dominate the downstream supply chain

Technologically big jumps in battery happen once in a decade on an average relative to semiconductors where tech jumps happen in about 2 yrs. With EVs and IoTs gaining ground we can expect more faster battery tech jumps.

Also India has found Lithium reserves in J&k. With time it should support the EV ecosystem in India and reduce dependence on imports.

Good insight. Need to see how the Lithium reserves are capitalised on in the coming years.

It will certainly be a good boost for the EV ecosystem in our country.
